What Freezer Map does

Frozen food is hard to see. Bags and tubs look alike, labels frost over, and the usual way to answer whether there is still salmon, and in which drawer, is to pull everything onto the counter. Freezer Map is a drawing of your freezer that remembers what you put in each part of it. Type a food and the bins that hold it light up.

It is a one-page web app. No account, no upload, and nothing to install.

Step by step

  1. Set up the map once. The app starts with four bins: Top shelf, Middle shelf, Bottom drawer and Door rack. Open Edit shelves and bins to rename them, add new ones, change their order with the Up and Down buttons or remove them, until the drawing matches your real freezer. Each bin is a shelf, a drawer or a door rack.
  2. Tap a bin on the map, then fill in the item form: what it is, the quantity, a unit such as packs, tubs or bags, the date it was frozen and an optional note.
  3. Press Add item. The bin on the map now shows what it holds.
  4. When you take something out, press Take 1 out on that item. The quantity drops by one, and the item disappears when it reaches zero.
  5. Use Move to on an item if it changes shelf, or edit it to correct a mistake.
  6. To find something later, type in Find in freezer.

The find spotlight

As you type a food name, every bin that contains a match lights up on the map and the others dim. A result list under the search box says exactly which bin each match is in and how long it has been frozen. Press Clear to return to the normal view.

The use soon flag

Items that have been frozen for more than 180 days are flagged use soon, both on their bin and in the list. The flag is a reminder to rotate stock. It is not a food-safety rule, and the app gives no safety advice.

Where your data is stored

Your bin layout, your items and one setting, the number of days before the use soon flag appears, are saved in this browser's local storage, and nowhere else. The page makes no network requests. If you open Freezer Map in another browser or on another device, it will show the default empty freezer until you import an export there.

Export, import and print

ButtonWhat it gives you
Export JSONThe full map and contents in one file, which can be imported again.
Export CSVA spreadsheet with one row per item, grouped by bin, including days frozen.
Copy as textA plain list for each bin on the clipboard.
Print listThe same list on paper, to tape to the lid or the door.
ImportLoads a JSON export from a file or pasted text, after asking you to confirm, and replaces the current map.
ResetAsks twice, then clears everything and restores the default four bins.

Limits

  • One freezer per browser. There is no support for several freezers in one map.
  • Bin and item names can be up to 60 characters and notes up to 200.
  • No barcode scanning and no recipe suggestions.
  • No reminders. The use soon flag is only visible when you open the page.
  • Deleting a bin that still holds items asks which bin they should move to.

Tips

  1. Name bins the way you would describe them aloud, such as Left basket or Door top, so the result list reads like directions.
  2. Record the frozen-on date honestly, even for food frozen weeks ago. The use soon flag depends on it.
  3. Enter batch cooking as one item with a quantity, then use Take 1 out each time a portion leaves.
  4. Print the list after a big shop and tape it to the freezer, for anyone in the house who does not use the app.
  5. Export a JSON file before you clear browser data, because that is the only copy.

Questions and answers

Can I change the layout after adding food?

Yes. Bins can be renamed, reordered, added and removed at any time, and items can be moved between them.

What does use soon mean?

The item has been frozen for more than 180 days. It is a reminder, not a safety verdict.

Can I map two freezers?

Not in one map. The app handles a single freezer per browser.

Where is my freezer list kept?

In the local storage of the browser you used. It is not uploaded anywhere.
