What Wave Rider is
Wave Rider is an endless climb across a synthwave sunset. Your rider moves upward without stopping and swings from side to side in a smooth wave. Bars with a gap in them and walled channels lie across the route. Thread the rider through every gap and down the middle of every channel, and each obstacle cleared adds to the score.
Controls
Tap anywhere to flip the wave. The rider stays where it is but instantly reverses its sideways direction: if it was sliding right toward trouble, one tap sends it sliding left. You never set the rider's position directly. The first tap on the menu starts a run and a tap after a wipeout retries.
Riding the rhythm
The wave swings by itself, so the best move is often no tap at all. Judge where the rider will be when it reaches the bar, not where it is now, and flip only when the natural swing would miss. Some gaps drift sideways and have to be led. The level is built so that the time between obstacles is always longer than half a swing of the wave, which means every gap can be reached.
What a pass is worth
| Event | Points |
|---|---|
| Clearing any obstacle | 10 |
| Center pass, through the middle of the gap | 5 more, and it builds the wave streak |
| Wave streak | 3 more for each center pass in a row, counted up to ten |
| Perfect arc, a center pass with no taps since the last obstacle | 10 more, plus 5 for each perfect arc in the current surf streak, counted up to ten. That is 15 on the first and 60 from the tenth on |
| Golden orb | 15 |
Shaving an edge throws sparks as a near miss. Your high score is saved on the device and STATS on the title screen shows lifetime numbers.
Tide shifts and surf streaks
Every 30 points the tide shifts for a stretch. The wave visibly WIDENS or NARROWS, announced by a banner and by glowing edge lines while it changes. A wider wave carries you further on each swing, so your timing has to change with it.
Chain perfect arcs, center passes made without tapping, to build a SURF STREAK. Your wake glows brighter and each arc pays a growing bonus. Any tap breaks it.
What ends a run, and the modes
Touching the edge of a gap or the wall of a channel wipes you out, and the result screen shows which side you drifted to and by how much. As the run goes on, gaps shrink to about half their starting width, gaps start moving, channels and stacked double bars appear, the climb roughly doubles in speed and the wave itself swings faster.
A wipeout offers a single revive per run for three seconds, followed by a brief spell of invincibility if you take it. HYPER, next to CLASSIC on the title screen, speeds everything up by a quarter and pays one and a half times the points.
Tips
- Trust the wave. A center pass with zero taps is worth more than the same pass after a correction.
- Flip once, early. One tap well before a bar is easier to judge than two taps close to it.
- Treat a walled channel as a long gap. Its walls end a run just as a bar's edge does, so line up for the middle before you enter.
- Take golden orbs only when they sit on your line. Swerving for 15 points can ruin your approach to the next gap.
- When the tide banner appears, watch a full swing at the new width before trusting your old timing.
- Read the result screen. It shows which side you drifted to and by how much, and that is the correction to make on the next run.
Questions and answers
Does a tap move the rider?
No. It keeps its position and only reverses which way it is sliding.
What is a perfect arc?
A pass through the center of a gap with no taps since the previous obstacle. It pays 15 extra points the first time, and 5 more for each perfect arc you chain after it, up to 60.
What is a tide shift?
A stretch, triggered every 30 points, during which the wave becomes wider or narrower.
Can every gap be reached?
Yes. Obstacles are spaced so the wave always has time to bring the rider to the opening.
