What Night Train Operator is

Night Train Operator is a cozy railway that runs by itself. A single line crosses three regions, a rainy city, a forest suburb and a stretch of mountain tunnels. Trains drive themselves along it, pick up waiting passengers and set them down further on. Every delivered passenger pays coins and earns reputation, and you spend both on a bigger railway.

Nothing ends a run. There are no crashes, no timers and no way to lose. Passengers wait until a train comes, and progress saves by itself on your device every few seconds.

Controls

  • Tap a station to open it. The panel shows its level and how many passengers are waiting, with an Upgrade button and its price.
  • Tap a switch lamp, the small light where a loop track branches off, to set the points.
  • Drag to look around and pinch to zoom.
  • The focus button in the top bar snaps the camera back to following your train.
  • Extend line and New train appear as buttons with their prices.

Where the coins come from

A delivered passenger pays 2 coins plus 0.4 for every level of the station they arrive at, so a level 1 destination pays 2.4 per passenger and a level 6 destination pays 4.4. Each passenger also adds half a point of reputation. Bigger stations help twice: they attract passengers faster and they hold a longer queue before the platform is full.

What you can buy

PurchaseCost in coinsNotes
Station upgrade40, 160, 360, 640, then 1,000Takes a station from level 1 up to level 6, one level at a time.
Line extension260, 430, 650, then 920You start with three stations. Each extension opens the next, up to seven.
Second train320Needs operator level 2.
Third train620Needs operator level 3. Three is the maximum.

Operator level comes from reputation and runs from 1 to 9. Level 2 needs 60 reputation and level 3 needs 240, which is 120 and 480 delivered passengers.

Loops, switches and the express

The line is single track with a short passing loop in each region. With one train there is nothing to pass. With two or three, setting the points lets trains pass each other on the loops instead of waiting in a queue.

The second train you buy is an express. An express always stops at both ends of the line, but in between it only stops at stations of level 3 or higher. The first and third trains are classic trains that stop everywhere.

Settings and the watch mode

Settings holds switches for sound, haptics and reduced motion, and a weather choice of Clear, Rain or Snow. The same sheet has a button labeled Watch Cinematic Mode, which hides the interface and films the railway. Double-tap to return to the game.

Tips

  1. Upgrade destinations, not just busy platforms. The fare depends on the level of the station where the passenger gets off.
  2. The first upgrade of any station costs only 40 coins. Take every station to level 2 before pushing one to level 4.
  3. Buy the second train as soon as you reach operator level 2. It costs less than the second line extension and puts a second set of doors on the line.
  4. Before the express arrives, bring your middle stations to level 3, or it will run straight past them.
  5. With more than one train, set the switch lamps so trains meet on a loop and not on the single track between loops.
  6. Extend the line when platforms are nearly empty, not when they are crowded. A longer line with the same trains means longer waits.

Questions and answers

Can trains crash?

No. Trains hold for each other and nothing in the game can be lost.

Why does my new train skip stations?

The second train is an express. Between the two ends of the line it only stops at stations of level 3 or above.

How many stations and trains can I have?

Seven stations and three trains.

What does reputation do?

It raises your operator level, and the operator level is what allows you to buy each extra train.
